Does anyone remember what the alien is supposed to be this week for Dr Who?
To me it's always a bit of a disappointment that they show trailers of the following week's episode at the end of the one that you've just watched. I reckon that Riversong would call them spoilers!
It's like a kind of visual indigestion.
You haven't had time to really put that show into place mentally and they are already trying to fill your mind with what's heading your way the week after. And I don't think that's fair or right.
I suppose that on the positive side, it gives you a week to start to put your own thoughts together as to what may be about to happen the following week, to share those moments of excited dread (mixed with hope) on how the Dr is going to pull the rabbit out of the hat and rescue everyone again. When you watch it the following week, you can then marvel at the ingenuity of the writer if they've done a good job. In that sense the spoiler is a cliff hanger well in advance!
But on the downside, it takes some of the thrill out of the episode that you've just seen. You can't sit back and enjoy it properly, because your head is full of the knowledge that something new and indescribably wicked is heading towards them.
And whilst I've been jotting these notes down, I think I've remembered the alien for the weekend - wasn't it some sort of melted plastic faced Edvard Munch screaming thing? How exciting, I can hardly wait to see how the Dr gets out of that one....
As I opened the Radio Times and saw that tonight's episode is a two-parter, I felt a heavy sigh coming on. That, coupled with the fact that it doesn't start until 6.45pm this evening, means that I shall have an extra three-quarters of an hour to wait for my cocktail. (Dr Who and cocktail hour are synonymous in our house!) As this is episode 5 out of a total of 7 before the summer break, there are only two more 'stories' to win me round. Also, I've a horrible feeling that despite Stephen Moffat assuring us fans that all would become clear regarding Riversong, somehow I think we will be waiting until summer is over before this is explained.
ReplyDeleteAs I read the blurb in the Radio Times, I felt slightly more optimimist. It has been written by Ashes to Ashes' Matthew Graham and that has to have been one of my favourite TV shows of late.
In terms of the 'baddies' this week, my seven year old assures me they are aliens that look like people without teeth. He also referred to people walking around in space suits. His comment is that Dr Who is getting way too scary for him. He is, however, a real Matt Smith fan, so the compromise is that we shall pull the sofa out a bit for him to hide behind this evening!
The Radio Times describes the aliens as dopplegangers created from programmable matter. The scary bit will be the fact that us viewer won't be able to tell who's real and who's engineered. This could be confusing, given that Rory is a robot, isn't he???
I shall watch, as always, and I am hopeful that I will finally enjoy this week's episode.
Well done Matt - predicted the end of this week's episode. And hurrah - I finally enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteMatt also says "so, which Dr gets shot by the spaceman???!!!"
